Cygnus X Releases Map Explorer for iPhone and Android

October 2, 2026

Cygnus X has released Map Explorer for iPhone and Android. The app turns the places you travel into a personal exploration map, helping you see where you have been, remember what you found, and decide where to explore next.

Map Explorer can record a walk or drive when you choose to start tracking. As you move, it adds your route to your personal map. You can also bookmark places, organize them into categories, attach photos or videos, and review statistics about your exploration.

Who can use Map Explorer?

Map Explorer was designed to be useful anywhere that discovering, covering, or remembering places matters. That includes far more than traditional outdoor adventures.

  • Hikers and trail walkers can record the paths they have covered and see which directions remain unexplored.
  • Campers can bookmark campsites, trailheads, water sources, scenic viewpoints, stores, and other useful places near camp.
  • Urban explorers can work through unfamiliar streets and neighborhoods while saving murals, architecture, parks, shops, and unexpected discoveries.
  • Travelers and tourists can create a personal record of the areas they visited instead of relying only on a list of attractions.
  • Road-trippers and scenic drivers can track drives and mark overlooks, roadside stops, restaurants, and places worth returning to.
  • Walkers, runners, and cyclists can vary their regular routes, explore new blocks or trails, and review the ground they have covered.
  • Photographers and video creators can save locations with an attached image or video for future shoots.
  • Birdwatchers, naturalists, and wildlife enthusiasts can bookmark observation areas and preserve a visual reminder of what they found there.
  • History and architecture enthusiasts can mark historic buildings, public art, landmarks, and interesting parts of a city.
  • Families can keep track of parks, playgrounds, picnic areas, and kid-friendly places they would like to visit again.
  • Dog walkers can find more variety in everyday walks and remember useful stops such as parks and water fountains.
  • New residents and students can become familiar with a new city, neighborhood, or campus one outing at a time.
  • Field workers and local professionals can keep a private on-device map of areas covered and locations they need to remember.
  • People who simply want a reason to get outside can use the unexplored parts of their map as motivation to take a different street or visit a new part of town.

A map that becomes your own

Most mapping apps are built to get everyone to a destination. Map Explorer is built to show your individual progress. Over time, the map becomes a visual record of the streets, trails, neighborhoods, and trips that you have personally experienced.

The app includes optional route tracking, saved places, custom bookmark categories, quick-add presets, photos and videos, exploration statistics, and local backup and import tools. Tracking starts and stops only when you choose.

Your personal map data stays on your device

Routes, bookmarks, attached media, and settings remain on your device unless you choose to export them. Map Explorer does not upload your personal map data to Cygnus X. A local export can be used to back up the map and import it again later.
