White Bread
Ingredients
- all-purpose flour
- warm water
- sugar
- salt
- active dry yeast (or instant yeast)
- butter or oil
Instructions
1. Add two cups of cold water to the microwave for 2 minutes
2. Add 350g warm water (100–104°F / 38–40°C) to a large mixing bowl
3. Add 7g active dry yeast
4. Let sit for 5–10 minutes until foamy
5. Add 500g bread flour
6. Add 10g salt
7. Mix until a shaggy sticky dough forms
8. Knead for 10–12 minutes until very smooth and elastic
9. Cover bowl and let dough rise for 60–90 minutes until doubled in size
10. Lightly grease a standard loaf pan
11. Flatten dough gently into a rectangle and roll tightly into a loaf
12. Place dough seam-side down into loaf pan
13. Cover and let rise for 30–45 minutes until the dough crowns above the pan
14. Preheat oven to 465°F (240°C)
15. Score the top of the loaf with a sharp knife
16. Bake at 465°F (240°C) for 15 minutes
17. Reduce oven temperature to 425°F (218°C) and bake another 20–25 minutes until deep golden brown
18. Remove loaf from pan immediately after baking
19. Cool on a wire rack for at least 1 hour before slicing
20. For the best chewy texture, wait several hours or overnight before cutting
